Princess Diana's shocking weight loss meant wedding dress makers had to keep starting again

Princess Diana's shocking weightloss in the lead up to her Royal Wedding meant the designers creating her famous dress had to keep restarting their work.

Lady Diana Spencer picked the relatively unknown designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel to make her stunning gown and worked closely with them to create the dream dress.

The huge ivory silk taffeta and antique lace gown, which had a 25ft train, reportedly cost £9,000 at the time and featured puffed sleeves and more then 10,000 pearls.

But Elizabeth has revealed that the team working tirelessly to create it had to restart their work several times as Diana lost so much weight in the months before.

In just four months she lost five inches off her waist.

Speaking on Channel 5's new documentary Charles and Di: The Truth Behind their Royal Wedding, she said: "All the fittings took place in our studio. In 1981 we had been in business just over a year.

"Suddenly the biggest commission of all time arrived. So she was winging it and so were we to be honest.

"She did lose weight. She was losing so much we even had to start again a few times, even after cutting into the fabric.

"Her waist was a size 23 at the end. She was tiny, like a model. She looks fantastic."

Journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown compared her wedding day figure to the photos of her from just a few weeks before.

She said: "When we first saw Diana in those first pictures, she was a normal young woman, normal weight, lovely round face.

"She looked beautiful, but she melted away."

Diana's final dress fitting took place on Wednesday, July 22 - just a few days before the wedding.

People lined the streets to get a glimpse of her leaving the fitting and photographers lined up with ladders outside.

Elizabeth said: "She settled on this one particular silhouette that we all thought looked fantatic.

"It had the tiny waist, the wide shoulders the the big frill, big skirt.

"It was a very unusual dress, when we did it it was completely breaking the mould."

But Elizabeth has admitted that she was "horrified" when she saw Diana getting out of her carriage as she arrived at church on the day of the wedding.

Speaking previously she said: "We did know it would crease a bit but when I saw her arrive at St Paul's and we saw the creasing I actually felt faint.

"I was horrified, really, because it was quite a lot of creasing.

"It was a lot more than we thought."
