Princess Diana’s brother has demanded a BBC inquiry into the tactics used to secure the 1995 interview where she lifted the lid on her troubled marriage.

Earl Spencer alleges journalist Martin Bashir showed him faked bank statements revealing courtiers were selling information on his sister to win his trust and be introduced to her.

The interview, in which Diana told Bashir there were “three people in the marriage” in reference to her husband’s relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, was seen by 23 million viewers and made headlines across the world.

Writing to director-general Tim Davie, Earl Spencer accused the BBC of “sheer dishonesty” and called an earlier investigation “a whitewash”. He said: “If it were not for me seeing these statements, I would not have introduced Bashir to my sister.”

A BBC spokesman said they would not “comment on or confirm private correspondence” and any inquiry would not go ahead while Bashir was “seriously unwell” with Covid-related complications.

They added: “Our records show... the BBC’s key piece of information was the hand-written statement from the Princess of Wales, who said she hadn’t seen the mocked-up documents and they had played no part in her decision to take part in the interview.”
