The aunt of the late Princess Diana has died aged 99, her brother Charles Spencer said tonight.
The 9th Earl Spencer announced the new on Instagram and paid tribute a "wonderful lady".
He wrote: "Aunt Anne and my father, playing at Althorp House in 1925.
"A wonderful lady, she was an officer in the WRENS in the Second World War, and was a much loved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother - as well as sister and aunt, of course.
"Aunt Anne died last night, aged 99 1/2. 'The end of an era' is the phrase I’ve heard repeatedly today. Indeed it is."
He shared a picture of his aunt playing with his father John Spencer on the family estate of Althorp in 1925.
Aunt Anne would have been five and John would have been one.
Lady Anne married sweetheart Christopher Baldwin Hughes Wake-Walker in 1944. He died in 1998 after being diagnosed with Parkinson's.
They had five children together, Elizabeth Duckworth-Chad, David, Richard and Michael Spencer and Diana Macfarlane.
Diana and her brothers would often visit the family and the pair were said to have a special relationship.
Lady Anne was devastated when Diana was killed in a Paris car crash in 1997.
Months after, she said the Princess was a "'sweet, thoughtful and very kind girl with a marvellous sense of humour."
A picture of Lady Anne can be seen at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
She lived in a 400-year-old house in East Bergholt in Suffolk.
In 2011, she attended the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey.
She was the only daughter of the 7th Earl Spencer Albert Spencer.
