Princess Diana is still more popular than King Charles and the monarchy 25 years after her death, data shows

Princess Diana is more popular than King Charles and the monarchy in general, according to YouGov. Following the premiere of The Crown season five last week, YouGov included the late Princess of Wales in their favourability tracker, to see how her reputation compares to that of other members of the Royal Family.

Much of the latest season of Netflix’s royal drama focuses on the tumultuous relationship between Diana and Charles, the then-Prince of Wales, who eventually divorced in 1996. According to YouGov, Diana’s legacy “remains strong,” and she is still more popular than her former husband and the monarchy in general more than 25 years after her death in a Paris car crash.

The data shows almost three quarters (72 percent) of Brits have a positive view of Diana, including a third (34 percent) who have a “very positive” view. In contrast, two thirds (67 percent) of Brits have a positive view of King Charles, while just under two thirds (60 percent) have a favourable opinion of the institution of the monarchy in general.

Only a quarter (25 percent) hold a “very” positive view of Charles, and just a fifth (20 percent) say the same about the monarchy. According to YouGov, Diana’s ratings are “overwhelmingly positive” among all age groups, but around a quarter (25-26 percent) of those aged 50 and above hold a negative view of the princess.

This is compared to 13 percent of 25-49-year-olds and 9 percent of 18-24-year-olds. The age group most likely to hold a positive view of Diana are those aged 25-49, at 79 percent.

70 percent of 18-24-year-olds also view Diana positively, but 21 percent of this age groups said they “don’t know”. The most popular royal, according to the data, is Price William with 81 percent holding a positive view of the now-Prince of Wales.

This includes 45 percent who have a “very positive” view of William. His wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales sits just behind, with 75 percent holding a positive view of the future Queen.
