Princess Diana interview will never be aired again says BBC boss

The interview between Martin Bashir and Diana will never be shown again, according to the BBC's director-general.

A report this week found that the interview 26 years ago was secured using deceit - including falsfied documents.

Asked if Martin Bashir’s interview with the Princess of Wales will be aired again, BBC director-general Tim Davie said: “I’ve got no intention of airing the interview ever again.”

Pushed on whether he meant never any aspect of it, he told Radio 4’s Today programme: “I think we need to discuss clips and reflect on that.”

Mr Davie added: “My view is you cannot now look at this interview free from the context in which it was secured.”

He said any use of clips must be considered in that context.

Mr Davie was asked if the BBC accepts that there was a direct line between the forged documents, what Martin Bashir did, and Diana dying.

He told Radio 4’s Today programme: “I think we fully accept the Dyson report. I think beyond that, Justin (Webb), we are into speculation, and that’s where I am.”

It was put to Mr Davie that what he is saying is that he does not accept a direct line, and he said: “I haven’t got the evidence of that, Justin. It’s as simple as that. It’s not a question of rejecting it.

“It’s just simply I’m driven by the evidence in the Dyson report. And I think that’s a fair reading of what I’ve got in front of me.”

Mr Davie said there were three reasons why he accepted Martin Bashir’s resignation, telling Radio 4’s Today programme: “Martin Bashir offered his resignation prior to us seeing the Dyson report. I think there were three reasons why I accepted the resignation.

“The first was there were very significant medical care issues, which, you know, in terms of Martin Bashir as a staff member, regardless of all the situation around it, is a factor.

“The second is it allowed a clean break with no pay-off, which I thought was in the licence fee-payers’ interest to make sure that there was a clean process.

“The third was there was no restraint in us getting to the truth. This was not an honourable discharge.”
