Princess Diana got William an 'embarrassing' 13th birthday cake - but Harry loved it

Becoming a teenager and turning 13 is a pretty big moment in a person's life (or at least it seems like it at the time).

But if there's one thing we all know, it's that being in your teen years is also a pretty awkward time and one thing we end up finding more embarrassing than anything else at that age is our parents.

And it seems even the Royal Family aren't immune to this feeling.

It turns out that when Prince William finally became a teenager, his mum, Princess Diana, couldn't resist playing a little joke on her son and getting him a rude birthday cake.

Instead of opting for a classic victoria sponge or a Colin the Caterpillar (or a Cuthbert for that matter), Diana had a sweet treat made for William that made him turn 'bright red'.

Meanwhile, his brother Harry is said to have loved the cake and even asked for one for himself, according to The Daily Mail.

Darren McGrady, a former palace chef, revealed all (Toronto Star)

Former Buckingham Palace chef, Darren McGrady, told Hello! magazine: "I came into work that morning and went down to the refrigerator, opened the door and I was just confronted with the biggest pair of boobs I've ever seen in my life.

"The Princess had ordered a boobs cake for William's 13th birthday.

"The Princess loved embarrassing people in the nicest way, in a fun way, whether it was telling a dirty, risqué joke – which usually got me.

"William just went bright red."

Diana was well known for having a cheeky sense of humour and Harry and William have previously spoken about how she encouraged them to be naughty - but not to get caught.

Speaking on the ITV documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life And Legacy, back in 2017, Harry recalled one of Diana's favourite parenting mottos.

He said: "She was one of the naughtiest parents… One of her mottos to me was, 'You can be as naughty as you want, just don’t get caught'.

"She would come and watch us play football and smuggle sweets into our socks."

The Duke of Cambridge also recalled how his mum would send them "rude" cards while they were at school.

"She was a massive card writer. She loved the rudest cards you can imagine," he explained.

"Usually she found something very embarrassing – you know, a very funny card and then wrote very nice stuff inside. But I dared not open it in case the teachers or anyone else in the class saw it.

"There was always a sense of enthusiasm and energy around her, and a lot of warmth as well."
