Princess Charlotte starts her first day of school today

Like the thousands of other four year olds across the country, Princess Charlotte headed to school today to start her first day.

Accompanied by parents Prince William, with his wife Kate holding her hand, Charlotte will follow in the footsteps of her six-year-old big brother, Prince George.

Charlotte celebrated her fourth birthday on May 2 and therefore on Thursday morning began her schooling journey at Thomas's Battersea school in south London.

The pair of school children were dressed in a navy uniform, with Charlotte in a dress and matching cardigan with red trimming, while her brother started his second year in primary school in a pair of shorts with a matching sweater.

It must be a big day for the Princess as whilst she is usually known for her cheeky appearances in public - with recently sticking her tongue out for the cameras - today, Charlotte appeared to be shy; momentarily hiding behind her mum.

The school's head, Helen Haslem, greeted the family at the entrance to Thomas's lower school and shook the four-year-old's hand - where William said his daughter was "very excited."

It was a full family affair for Charlotte's first day at school compared to when George first started out.

Kate was unable to be there for George's first day at school as she was suffering from severe morning sickness while pregnant with the Royal couple's third child, Louis.

Fees for Thomas's, where students often move on to top schools such as Eton, are up to £21,786 a year.
Charlotte previously attended Willcocks Nursery in Kensington.
