Princess Charlotte 'very excited' as she arrives for first day at school at Thomas's Battersea with William, Kate and George

Princess Charlotte was said to be "very excited" as she arrived for her first day at school.

The young royal was joined by her parents the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and older brother Prince George as she arrived at Thomas's Battersea in south west London this morning.

Charlotte, aged four, looked slightly hesitant as she arrived in the playground, clutching her mother's hand with both of her own.

She then cheekily peered out to the cameras from behind the Duchess of Cambridge, while George held hands with his father.

Waiting to greet Charlotte was Helen Haslem, head of the lower school.

The duchess smiled and asked: "How are you? Did you have a nice summer?".

Ms Haslem then bent down to shake George's hand, before greeting the princess, who will be known as Charlotte Cambridge to staff and schoolmates.

She then shook hands with Kate and William, who beamed: "First day - she's very excited."

Charlotte then played with her ponytail as she was taken inside the school building.

The family had driven to the school. William had parked the family Land Rover Discovery in an internal car park.

Charlotte is following in the footsteps of brother George, aged six, who has been at the school for two years.

Despite being a Christian school, Thomas’s is open to people of all faiths and believes in “praise as the greatest motivator”.

Parents are told their children will be in an atmosphere which seeks positive relationships between pupils, teachers and parents.

Art, ballet, drama, ICT, French, music and physical education are all taught by specialist teachers from a child’s first day.

The school is housed in a Grade II listed building, the former Sir Walter St John’s Grammar School which dates back to 1700.

Kate was wearing a Michael Kors dress as she dropped Charlotte off at school.

She missed George's first day at Thomas's Battersea in 2017 as she was suffering from severe morning sickness while pregnant with Prince Louis.
