Princess Beatrice's sweet nod to her stepson in new daughter's birth announcement

Princess Beatrice became a mum for the first time over the weekend when she gave birth to her daughter with husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

The new arrival, who weighed in at six pounds and two ounces, is Beatrice's first child but a second for Edoardo, who already has a young son, Christopher, also known as Wolfie, from his previous relationship with ex-girlfriend Dara Huang.

When Beatrice and Edoardo wed last year in a secret wedding at Windsor amid the coronavirus pandemic - Beatrice became Wolfie's stepmum.

And in announcing the birth of her daughter earlier today, Beatrice gave a sweet nod to Wolfie in the statement from Buckingham Palace.

It said that both Princess Beatrice and the as-yet unnamed newborn were both doing well and that she and Edoardo are "looking forward to introducing their daughter to her big brother Christopher Woolf".

It's not the first time that Beatrice and Edoardo have made sure Wolfie is included in milestones in their relationship.

Last year, when they married, Wolfie was part of the wedding and acted as best man for his dad and as a page boy.

A friend of the couple told the Daily Mail that the youngster was asked to carry out the role because they wanted to show that he is loved and embraced by Beatrice.

They said: "Bea is totally into the stepmum role. She’s very concerned about getting it right and making every effort to be a second mother to Wolfie.

"She’s totally devoted to him and talks about him all the time."

They also said that Beatrice is working hard to make sure Wolfie knows he has two families, including making sure their home is filled with photos of him.

They continued: "Bea has always been really close to Edo’s family, so it’s natural that Wolfie should become part of hers.

"He’s a super little boy and extremely cute. It will be interesting to see what happens when they start their own family – but Bea is so caring, his happiness will always be her number one priority."

Meanwhile, just last month, Beatrice also gave a rare insight into her role as a stepmum, calling Wolfie her "bonus son".

Beatrice spoke to Hello! magazine, in a chat in which she also opened up about having dyslexia, how it affected her school days and how she has been helping others with it.

And talking about the various coronavirus lockdowns and how they affected schools, Beatrice said: "Homeschooling, that was definitely not my forte! Not going to lie. Sadly, I can't blame that on dyslexia.

"But I've felt very lucky to have had the chance to work with my bonus son (Wolfie) over the course of the school closures. It was a huge learning curve for all of us."

In the statement today announcing the birth of Beatrice and Edoardo's new daughter, Buckingham Palace said: "Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter on Saturday 18th September 2021, at 23.42, at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London.

"The baby weighs 6 pounds and 2 ounces.

"The new baby’s grandparents and great-grandparents have all been informed and are delighted with the news. The family would like to thank all the staff at the hospital for their wonderful care."
