Princes William and Harry reveal Princess Diana told them "be as naughty as you want - just don't get caught"

It's no secret that the late Princess Diana doted on her two sons, the Princes William and Harry.

Before she was tragically killed in a car accident in 1997, the Princess was regularly seen showering her boys with affection.

But according to William and Harry, behind the scenes the Princess was a delightfully playful parent and encouraged her boisterous boys to be naughty if and when they could.

Speaking in a documentary about her incredible life Harry and William shared a number of sweet memories of their mother.

Diana, Our Mother: Her Life And Legacy, Harry recalled one of Diana's favourite parenting mottos.

He said: "She was one of the naughtiest parents... One of her mottos to me was, 'You can be as naughty as you want, just don't get caught'.

"She would come and watch us play football and smuggle sweets into our socks."

At one point he recalls "walking back from a football match and [hiding] five packets of Starburst... the whole shirt was just bulging with sweets, and then look around, open the tuck box, throw it all in, lock it up."

Harry described the elegant and graceful Diana as 'a total kid', adding: "Behind closed doors, she was a very loving caring mother and an incredibly funny person. A total kid, through and through."

During the documentary, which was first aired on ITV in 2017, William shared similar funny memories of his mum and praised her for attempting to give them a "normal" life.

He said: "She made the decision that, no matter what, despite all of the difficulties of growing up in that limelight and on that stage, she was going to ensure that both of us had as normal a life as possible

The Duke of Cambridge also recalled how his mum would send them "rude" cards while they were at school.

"She was a massive card writer. She loved the rudest cards you can imagine," he explained.

"Usually she found something very embarrassing - you know, a very funny card and then wrote very nice stuff inside. But I dared not open it in case the teachers or anyone else in the class saw it.

"There was always a sense of enthusiasm and energy around her, and a lot of warmth as well."
