Princes Street set for Bar + Bloc steakhouse on site of New Look store

Princes Street is set to get a steakhouse at the site of the current New Look store, as the neighbouring Premier Inn expands.

Fresh plans have been submitted to the city council for 50 new hotel rooms and a new Bar + Bloc restaurant.

The steakhouse chain has branches around the UK but the Princes Street branch would be the first in Edinburgh.

Those behind the application say it will revitalise the western end of the street.

Recently, there have been moves to to set up on Edinburgh's main thoroughfare

Bar + Bloc would be on the ground floor of the development, meaning diners would have a great view of Edinburgh Castle.

The application says: "The delivery of refurbished hotel space with additional rooms, together with the introduction of a high quality restaurant would be of great benefit to Princes Street, particularly in this west end location.

"There continues to be a natural gravitation of retailers towards the east end of the City, which is likely to be further exacerbated by the opening of the St James development in 2021.

"The introduction of alternative and complementary uses within Princes Street will ensure that this area remains vibrant and successful."

It notes that the west end of the street is becoming less upmarket: "Looking more specifically at the west end of Princes Street, there is an acknowledgement that the area is dying as a desirable retail location given the recent closure of the House of Fraser store and its current redevelopment to a non-retail use, the increasing number of vacancies in the west end, such as 136 Princes Street (former Santander), and the introduction of a ‘bargain store’ (Poundland) at 120 Princes Street."
