Princes Park through the years in pictures from bathtub sledging to a bed for a giant

Princes Park, originally part of King John's hunting ground of Toxteth, was privately built as a park in 1842, commissioned by Richard Vaughan Yates and designed by Joseph Paxton.

The park emerged around the same time as Princes Avenue and the surrounding area was being developed into a wealthy suburb for the city's merchants.

Given over to the city in 1849, since then the park has provided a much-loved green space for residents on the south side of the city.

The park has seen a lot of changes over its 177 years, and has been home to a wide range of events during this time, including a fair in its inaugural year featuring a hot air balloon, an event that was recreated in 2015 when a Victorian fun fair came to the park.

Princes Park has a lake which was once used as for boating, with a grade-II listed Swiss chalet style boating house that has since fallen into disrepair. These days the lake is used mainly for fishing.

In 2018, the Giants took over the Park during one memorable afternoon as the little boy and his dog Xolo took a well-deserved rest after walking up to Princes Park from the city centre - a spectacle which attracted thousands of visitors who lined Princes Avenue as elsewhere in the city for a glimpse of the remarkable giant puppets.

This summer the Colours Festival was held in Princes Park for the first time, with a fairground, a raft of community groups giving demonstrations and several stages showcasing the area's musical talent in a celebration of all things Liverpool 8.

Last week, the Mandela 8 group, who have been campaigning since Nelson Mandela's death in 2013 for a permanent memorial to the South African leader, announced work would commence on a memorial bridge across the park's lake by the end of this year.

This will be one of several changes to the park in recent years - a henge was built in 2014 and has quickly become a popular feature for families, who also make use of the nearby playgrounds.

The park also has an active support group called Friends of Princes Park, which regularly works on the upkeep of the park and helps to facilitate community events that are held there.

Every Saturday, the Park Run, one of the largest in the city, makes its way through the park.

With such a rich heritage, we took a look through the ECHO archives for some of the fascinating images of Princes Park that our photographers have taken over the years.
