Princes Park outbreak: New shielding guidance and emergency testing site to tackle virus spike

Urgent new guidance has been issued and an emergency coronavirus testing centre is being put in place to deal with an outbreak of coronavirus infections in a south Liverpool area.

Yesterday it was revealed that there had been a spike in infections affecting people of all ages in the Princes Park council ward - which includes parts of Toxteth, Dingle and the Canning area close to the city centre.

Liverpool City Council's Public Health team is now moving quickly to ensure the outbreak doesn't spiral out of control.

General guidance about hand washing, avoiding crowds, social distancing and wearing face coverings has already been reiterated by health bosses.

But now new measures are being put in place for the area in a bid to tackle the rise in cases.

A message has been sent to residents living in the area who are currently shielding away from others because they are seen as vulnerable to the virus.

The government's plan is to lift these shielding restrictions from tomorrow onwards across the UK.

But the message to Princes Park residents now advises anyone who is currently shielding to continue to do so until at least August 14.

It states: "There is an increase in Covid 19 infections in your area. We are advising all people who are currently shielding to continue to do so until at least August 14.

"Please remain at home and following guidelines.

"Further advice will follow in respect of food and other support."

This is only one element of the new measures being introduced for the area - with a more comprehensive list of guidance being issued later on.

The city council is also launching an emergency testing centre in the area and urging anyone who has any symptoms to immediately get a test.

The pop-up testing site will be located in the car park of the Princes Park health centre from Saturday August 1 for one week and will run from 9am to 4pm each day.

Anyone experiencing a new cough, high temperature or a loss of taste or smell is urged to get tested straight away.

The ECHO understands these are only the first of the new rules to be put in place in Princes Park, with further guidance and restrictions to follow soon.
