Princes Park coronavirus spike confirmed by Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson

There has been a spike of coronavirus cases in another area of south Liverpool, Mayor Joe Anderson has confirmed.

The city leader is chairing the first meeting of Liverpool's Health and Wellbeing board, a key summit discussing the fight against coronavirus so far.

At the start of the meeting he confirmed that there has been a concerning rise in cases in the Princes Park council ward, which includes areas of Toxteth, Dingle and the Canning area close to the city centre.

Mayor Anderson didn't give the meeting lots of information about the rise in cases, but said: "What we are seeing now in Princes Park with rise in cases shows how we have to keep on top of things."

The meeting has also heard from Liverpool's new Race Equality Taskforce chair, Tracey Gore, who spoke about the spike.

She said: "Obviously there is a spike of cases in Princes Park now and we know that is an area with a large BAME population."

The ECHO understands that more information will be provided by the city council about the rise in cases in the area shortly.

South Liverpool has seen an increase in cases in recent weeks, with areas like Childwall, Wavertree and Woolton affected, but this is the first time Princes Park has been a concern.

Speaking at the same meeting, Liverpool's Director of Public Health confirmed that recent small spikes in the Belle Vale, Woolton and Childwall areas have been followed this week with a rise in cases in Princes Park.
