Princes Highway reopened near Orbost after armed man arrested

The man entered the Bellbird Hotel at 9.30am, police say.

A siege involving a gunman in far east Gippsland that caused major delays on the Princes Highway has ended after more than eight hours.

Victoria Police said they had arrested the man, who was armed with a shotgun and had been holed up in the remote Bellbird Hotel, between Orbost and Cann River in Victoria's east, since 9:30am.

The man has been taken to hospital for assessment.

Special police negotiators were at the scene.

No-one was injured during the siege.

The man went to the hotel just as its owner was opening up this morning.

She escaped without injury and notified police.

Police had blocked the Princes Highway in both directions between Orbost and Cann River, while they tried to resolve the siege.

There were reports hundred of vehicles were banked up along the highway, with some travellers planning to stay in Orbost overnight.

The road block has now been lifted.

Earlier, Inspector Luke Smeaton said police had taken steps to make sure there was no danger to the public.
