Prince William sends special message to Wrexham after Welsh side secure promotion

Prince William has sent a special message to Wrexham after they booked their place back in the Football League after a 15-year absence following a 3-1 win over Boreham Wood.

The Red Dragons suffered an early setback at the Racecourse Ground courtesy of Lee Ndlovu's first-minute strike - but that didn't stop Phil Parkinson's side. Elliot Lee levelled on the quarter of an hour mark before Paul Mullin struck a second-half brace to secure the vital three points they needed to win the National League title.

After the full-time whistle, there were jubilant scenes as thousands of fans stormed onto the pitch, while co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney appeared to be very emotional as Wrexham booked their place in League Two for the first time since 2008.

It capped off a remarkable title race that saw Notts County push the Red Dragons all the way for the only automatic promotion spot. Following the game, Wrexham received a special message from Prince William, where he congratulated the Welsh side for gaining promotion back to the fourth tier.

In a personal message, William said: "Congratulations @wrexham_afc! A club with such amazing history, looking forward to a very exciting future back in the Football League. Doing Wales proud. W"

Wrexham have picked up a remarkable 34 wins from their 45 National League matches so far - and could reach 113 points should they beat Torquay in their final game next weekend. However, the Red Dragons won't be as bothered about that feat after securing the title in dramatic fashion.

Manager Phil Parkinson said: "We've kept our feet firmly on the ground. But there's going to be a big party over the next few days in Wrexham. I want all the supporters who have had these tough times supporting the club to enjoy it and really embrace tonight.

"They've got really amazing owners - we've got amazing owners - who have been so supportive to me and this football club. I think everybody knows now about 15 years outside the league, and the journey this club has been on throughout those 15 years has been torturous at times.

"The club nearly going out of business and the owners coming in and what they've done and the positivity in the town about the football club and how the players and staff have galvanised that. It's been very special and I genuinely feel this is the start of a journey."

Ryan Reynolds said on Twitter : "Everything I own smells like champagne, beer and grass. I’m still somewhere between giggling and sobbing. This town and this sport is one of the most romantic things on earth. Thank you, @Wrexham_AFC."
