Prince William's sweet promise to Kate before they got married - and how he's kept it

Marriage is all about compromises, no matter who you are.

But when you're marrying into the Royal Family, you're expected to make a few more compromises than the average citizen.

Kate Middleton had to say goodbye to her life completely when she met Prince William, as she no longer could just pop to the shops or jump on the bus whenever she fancied.

So, to make the transition a little easier, the Duke of Cambridge made the sweetest promise to Kate when they got married - and he's still keeping it to this day.

According to reports, William promised his wife-to-be that she wouldn't have to leave her own family behind when she married into the Windsor's.

Speaking on the documentary Kate Middleton: Working Class to Windsor, Vanity Fair’s Katie Nicholl explained how Kate and Wills broke tradition.

She said: “Once you married into the Royal Family, you became a Windsor and that was that.

"Well, it was different when Kate and William got married.

"When William asked Kate to marry him, he made it very clear that she wouldn’t have to leave her family behind her once she married into his family.

"He promised her that they’d always stay a part of the family and they have done.

“Whether it’s joining the Queen at Ascot or being on an important barge within the Queen’s fleet at the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, they’ve been there.”

Since William and Kate married in 2011, Kate's family has attended many public events alongside the royal family, including joining the Queen and Prince Philip for WW1 memorial service in Sandringham in 2016.

When Pippa Middleton married James Matthews in May 2017, Prince Harry was invited - and brought along his then-girlfriend Meghan for the evening reception.

William then invited Kate's entire family to his and Meghan's wedding in May 2018.

The Middletons also joined the Duke of Edinburgh at Ascot and have been to Sandringham, where the royal family spend every Christmas.
