Prince William has viewers in tears as he talks 'trauma' of mum's death in mental health doc

Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health, the poignant BBC mental health documentary fronted by Prince William, brought viewers to tears on Thursday night.

Many said William's mother, the late Princess Diana, would be incredibly proud of her son and his hard work erasing the stigma surrounding mental health.

William talked about the "trauma" of losing his mum when he was 15, and revealed the emotions came flooding back when he became a parent.

He was speaking to former Bolton and Burnley player Marvin Sordell, who had depression after growing up without his father.

"I grew up without my father and I've not had a father to look up to, and now I've got a child looking up at their father.

"I really struggled with my emotions at that time," he added, before asking William for advice on dealing with this.

“I can relate to what you're feeling," said William.

"Having children is the biggest life-changing moment, it really is.

“When you’ve been through something traumatic, like your dad not being around, my mother dying when I was younger, your emotions come back in leaps and bounds.

"Because it's a very different phase of life and there's no one around to help you.

"I definitely found it overwhelming at times."

He added that the support of his wife, Kate Middleton, had been paramount.

Touchingly, William told Marvin his father would be proud of him.

"Your mum would be too," said Marvin.

"I appreciate that," replied Will.

"I can see the kind of man you are and you're going to be a great dad."

One viewer tweeted: "Just watched Football, The Duke of Cambridge and Mental Health,an eye opening and uplifting programme.

"Well done to all involved for being honest and opening up, I shed a few tears.

"Prince William and team are doing a fantastic job. Your highness, your mum would be so proud xx".

Another added: "I’m crying but it’s all happy tears - thanks for showing us all your story with Prince William".

"Watching. Football, Prince William @ mental health. Only a few minutes in @ already in tears. So real, so true. Wrestling will have to be late night watching now," added a third.
