Prince William defends Royal Family saying 'We're very much not a racist family'

The Duke of Cambridge has defended the monarchy against accusations of racism and said their family is not racist.

Prince William made the comment during his first public appearance since damaging claims of bigotry and a lack of support were levelled at the Royal Family by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in their interview with Oprah Winfrey.

He and the Duchess of Cambridge toured School21 in Stratford, east London, on Thursday to mark the return of children to classes this week and the rollout to secondary schools of a mental health project Kate launched in primary schools in 2018.

As William left, a reporter asked him: "Is the Royal Family a racist family, sir?"

The duke, with the duchess by his side, replied: "We're very much not a racist family."

And when asked if he had spoken to his brother yet, he is understood to have told Sky News: "I haven't spoken to him yet but I plan to."

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's interview with Oprah Winfrey continues to send shock waves across the globe.

During the chat, which has been watched by millions of people, the couple made damaging claims.

One claim was that an unnamed member of the family had concerns and conversations about baby Archie on " how dark his skin might be when he’s born".

After the show was aired on ITV in the UK, Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying: "The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

"The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. Whilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

"Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members."
