Finding the one to spend the rest of your life with is never plain-sailing.
But for Prince William, who is the second-in-line to the throne, it must have been an even greater task as besides finding his other half, he also had to find a consort who would be by him if he became Head of State.
According to royal expert Robert Lacey, the Duke of Cambridge, 38 who last week celebrated his 10-year wedding anniversary with his Kate Middleton, felt like he had to "audition" his wife before being able to get engaged.
Appearing on ITV's The Day Will and Kate Got Married, Mr Lacey explained: "It's been said that William was auditioning Catherine for her future role.

"And I think there's a truth to that. William is the future King of Britain and the Commonwealth and, like it or not, part of his job was to choose a consort who would do the job well."
William and Kate first met as freshers at the University of St Andrews and spent four years together before the briefly split up in 2007.
According to royal expert Katie Nicholls, the break up was initiated by William who started to feel "claustrophobic" in the relationship and while Kate wanted him to commit, he didn't feel ready.

The couple got back together after a few months.
They have now celebrated 10 years since they awed an estimated two billion people around the world as they tied the knot at Westminster Abbey in April 2011.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have gone to have three kids, Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, six , and Prince Louis, three.
The couple last week released two new portraits of themselves to mark their 10 years together.
In one, Kate was beaming with delight as she nestled lovingly into the grinning future King, 38.
In a second image the couple sit holding hands, with Kate leaning against William.
Both photographs were taken at Kensington Palace this week by Chris Floyd, with the duchess sporting a dress by Ghost.
