Prince William and Kate wish for 'better 2021' in heartfelt Christmas message

Prince William and Kate Middleton have assured people feeling isolated or grieving on Christmas Day they are not alone.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge issued a tribute to those who are enduring a difficult festive season.

The coronavirus pandemic has wrought havoc and heartbreak on people's lives in the UK and around the world.

In a sombre message, the royals said wishing people a Merry Christmas 'didn't feel right this year' as they shared their hopes for a 'better 2021.'

The couple's tribute acknowledged people will spend today alone, ill, grieving, or working on the pandemic frontlines.

Their Kensington Royal official account also tweeted pictures of people working through the festive season, paying tribute to those struggling as well as the Christmas Day workforce.

Their message said: "This Christmas our thoughts are with those of you who are spending today alone, those of you who are mourning the loss of a loved one, and those of you on the frontline who are still mustering the energy to put your own lives on hold to look after the rest of us."

William and Kate added: "Wishing a merry Christmas doesn't feel right this year, so instead we're wishing for a better 2021.

"For those struggling today, there is support available: @GiveUsAShout @MindCharity @samaritans @theCALMzone."

The Cambridges are spending Christmas Day apart from the rest of the royal family this year, in keeping with the UK's coronavirus restrictions.

Millions around the UK are enduring lonely Christmases as they stay apart from family in an effort to curb the spread of Covid-19 and protect elderly and vulnerable family members.

The Queen, 94, and Prince Philip 99, are spending the day together apart from their royal brood at Windsor Castle.

In another rare break with tradition, the royals also won't attend church in Sandringham in the first time in 32 years.

The UK Government scrapped plans for Christmas 'bubbles' and banned mixing between households in Tier 4 areas in response to a surge in infections in recent weeks.
