Prince William and Kate to join royal Caribbean tour to mark Platinum Jubilee

Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge will be bringing their star power to Commonwealth nations including Belize this spring, as part of a Caribbean tour to mark the Queen ’s Platinum Jubilee this year.

The royal couple is also understood to be planning a trip to Jamaica, which has flirted with the idea of becoming a republic.

Prince Charles was present at the recent ceremony when Barbados removed the Queen as Head of State, in November.

Representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were seen on Belize’s paradise island of Ambergris Caye last week, it was revealed yesterday.

It was thought to be an advance party preparing for a proposed four-day visit to the Central American nation.

Prince William has a strong affinity for Belize having trained there with the Welsh Guards.

The trip to Ambergris Caye, which is on a barrier reef, will have a “focus on ecological issues”.

Buckingham Palace is keen for the royal couple to spend time in the region to shore up support for the monarchy. Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Dominica already have their own heads of state.

Last year, John Briceno, the Prime Minister of Belize, did not rule out his nation following suit, saying: “We need to find what fits Belize best.”

The last high-profile royal to visit Belize was Prince Harry in 2012 to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

It is hoped the couple will give the monarchy the boost it needs to convince Caribbean leaders not to follow Barbados.
