Prince William and Kate Middleton arrive in Edinburgh to thank NHS workers for Covid efforts

Kate and William were welcomed by a piper as the royal train arrived at Edinburgh Waverley on Monday morning.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are in Edinburgh on the first leg of a UK tour to thank frontline NHS workers.

A piper at the station played festive tunes like Santa Claus is coming to town and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

Wearing face masks, William and Kate thanked the piper before leaving the station onto Market Street where their convoy was seen driving into the city.

They set off from London Euston on Sunday evening for a 1,250-mile, three-day tour, which will see them thank communities, outstanding individuals and key workers for their efforts during the coronavirus pandemic.

The royal couple received a rock and roll send off from London this morning with a performance by Shakin' Stevens.

Before William and Kate boarded the service, the singer, known for a string of hits in the 1980s, sang his festive smash-hit single Merry Christmas Everyone for the couple and a group of transport workers.

"The Duke and Duchess are very much looking forward to shining a spotlight on the incredible work that has been done across the country throughout this difficult year," Kensington Palace said in a statement.

Scotland is not unfamiliar to either the duke or the duchess, who met whilst studying at St Andrews University in Fife in the early 2000's. They have both visited several times since leaving university.
