Members of the royal family have welcomed thousands of guests to Buckingham Palace for a garden party.

Tuesday's event followed a busy weekend for the royal family.

Amid pomp and pageantry, King Charles and Queen Camilla were crowned at London's Westminster Abbey on Saturday in Britain's biggest ceremonial event in 70 years.

The garden party celebrated the work of volunteers, military personnel and members of the public, including people selected by Queen Camilla in February to be handed Coronation Champion awards.

Eight thousand guests from all different walks of life were invited to the event to enjoy an afternoon tea comprising tiny sandwiches, cakes and other baked goods.

One of the guests was 93-year-old Dame Elizabeth Watts.

She told Prince William she slept on the streets for three nights in 1953 to catch a glimpse of Queen Elizabeth II during her coronation ceremony.

Another guest, Aldith Grandison, 93, and her daughter and carer Jay Cee La Bouche, 56, represented Carers UK at the party.

Princess Catherine, who was made joint president of the Scouts in 2021, had a chat with members of the organisation.

And what royal garden party wouldn't be complete with the Yeomen of the Guard? The monarchy's own personal bodyguard.

The Yeomen of the Guard was created by King Henry VII in 1485.
