The past year has been widely described as a make or break period for Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton, yet royal commentators now suggest the couple has emerged stronger than ever. Their steady presence is reinforcing their image as a pillar of stability within the monarchy.
Royal historian Amanda Foreman shared this perspective in a recent interview with Fox News Digital, praising the Prince and Princess of Wales for managing one of the most turbulent periods of their lives with unity and grace.
“The last five years have been a nightmare for them in every possible way. The past year even more so,” Foreman observed, referring to the intense personal and public pressures they have endured.
One of the most difficult challenges came in 2024, when the Princess of Wales was diagnosed with cancer. Although the exact type of cancer has not been disclosed, it is known that she underwent chemotherapy throughout the year. The situation was made more stressful by a data breach at the hospital where she received treatment, which reportedly threatened to leak sensitive medical information.
In January 2025, Princess Kate announced she was in remission, which Foreman described as happening just in time. She remarked that if there were ever a time when the country needed reassurance and stability, this was it, pointing to growing geopolitical tensions and internal challenges placing the monarchy under increased scrutiny.
Foreman also highlighted how serious illness can place immense strain on a marriage, saying that cancer either breaks a relationship or makes it stronger. In William and Kate’s case, it appears to have drawn them even closer together.
Despite dealing with personal hardship, the royal couple has continued to carry out their duties with a calm and united front, which has offered a sense of reassurance to the British public. Their composed appearances have resonated with many during a time of considerable uncertainty.
“It is rather extraordinary to see how both have risen to the occasion,” Foreman added. She noted that their ability to project strength and leadership, even while enduring private suffering, has only elevated their standing within the Royal Family and the public eye.
The Princess was not the only royal contending with serious health concerns in 2024. King Charles III and Sarah Ferguson were also diagnosed with cancer, marking the year as one of the most challenging in recent memory for the royal household.
Through it all, Prince William and Princess Kate have remained dignified and committed to their roles, solidifying their position as central figures in a modern and resilient monarchy.
