Prince William and Kate embroiled in 'petty popularity contest' with Meghan and Harry

The royal brothers and their wives have become tangled in a a "petty transatlantic popularity contest", a royal expert has claimed.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are being accused of forcing Prince William and Kate Middleton to up their game, after launching a charity and other projects since Megxit.

Royal author Duncan Larcome told Fabulous magazine: "Whether William and Kate like it or not, they are now international players in a transatlantic popularity contest with their own flesh and blood.

"Harry and Meghan have shown that modern royalty will only survive if it is absolutely at the cutting edge of social media and their profiles play into the narrative of the cult of the celebrity.

"Which is a complete change from the era of Prince Philip. It was never about the royals, it was about the causes, never complain, never explain, ignore questions about you and make it about your causes."

On Sunday, Harry and Meghan donated nappies and baby products to a charity supporting homeless pregnant women, under their Archewell Foundation.

Meghan was advised not to attend due to her pregnancy with their second child.

She since announced the launch of her new children's book.

Kate Middleton also launched a book this week, entitled Hold Still which featured 100 photos depicting Britain in lockdown. It flew straight to top of Amazon’s book chart.

Royal expert and known Sussex-critic, Angela Levin, recently said Meghan and Harry appeared "competitive" with the future king and queen.

Levin told The Sun: "I think Meghan and Harry feel they are always in control of the narrative and they feel they are in fierce competition - like a battle - with the Cambridges.

"But wise Kate and William are just trying to get on with their lives."
