Prince Philip: Where will Duke's body be held and moved to before funeral?

Prince Philip's body will be held in a chapel while the Queen observes an eight day period of mourning.

Prince Philip died at Windsor castle on Friday morning, Buckingham Palace announced at 12pm.

The Duke of Edinburgh had been reunited with the Queen weeks earlier after a 28 night stay at a London hospital.

His death triggered a great outpouring of public grieve, with hundreds of Brits making their way to Buckingham Palace to lay flowers in his memory.

It later emerged that his funeral will be held at St George's Chapel in Windsor, before he is laid to rest at Frogmore Gardens.

The date of the funeral, which will be a slimmed down affair as per Philip's wishes, is to be announced in the coming days.

Before the Duke of Edinburgh is laid to rest he will be examined by a member of the Medical Household, who will determine the cause of his death.

It is likely this will take place in their medical wing of Windsor Castle.

Then, while the Queen mourns for eight days, the Duke will be placed in a coffin which will be taken to the St George's Chapel within the Windsor Castle grounds, The Sun reports.

There he will lie at rest so that family members and invited guests have the opportunity to pay their respects to him, before he is taken to the Royal burial grounds at Frogmore Gardens.

Because Philip requested not to have a state funeral he will not lie in state - when a royal is placed inside a coffin so that members of the public can pay their respects.

Over the past century this has taken place in Westminster Hall, with King Edward VII the first British monarch to do so in 1910.
