Prince Philip tribute from Piers Morgan describes him as ‘great British icon’ as death announced

Piers Morgan has paid tribute to Prince Philip who he described as an ‘absolute rock’ to Her Majesty The Queen.

Buckingham Palace has announced that The Duke of Edinburgh passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle, aged 99.

The Queen announced her deep sorrow that her “strength and stay” died this morning.

Civic leaders, showbiz figures and those close to the Royal Family are now paying tribute to the Duke.

Among them is Piers Morgan, who described the Prince as a “truly great British icon.”

He said on Twitter: "RIP Prince Philip, 99.

"A truly great Briton who dedicated his life to selfless public duty and was an absolute rock of devoted support to Her Majesty, The Queen, as the longest-serving royal consort to any British sovereign.

"A very sad day for our country. Thank you, Sir."

The statement from Buckingham Palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

"Further announcements will made in due course.

"The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."
