Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, has died at the age of 99

Prince Philip has died at the age of 99, it has been confirmed by Buckingham Palace.

The Duke of Edinburgh - described by The Queen as her ‘strength and stay’ - passed away at Windsor Castle this morning.

The news of his death was confirmed in a statement from Buckingham Palace.

The statement said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

"Further announcements will made in due course.

"The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

Prince Philip had been in hospital earlier this year for treatment for a heart condition but had returned home to Windsor Castle last month after an operation.
