Prince Philip's Ibrox helicopter landings and why Rangers stadium became regular spot for Royal

The whole of UK was today sent into a national state mourning following the death of HRH Prince Philip, aged 99.

The Duke of Edinburgh passed away at Windsor Castle this morning, and the news was announced to the nation at midday.

The Prince might have had more obvious connections to Edinburgh, but he was also fond of Glasgow and made Ibrox Stadium his regular stop on Scottish trips.

Back when he used to make tours of Scotland, he would land his helicopter in the centre circle at Ibrox before making his way to where he needed to go.

It was a trip he regularly made during his early days as a member of the British Royal Family and he landed at the home of Rangers on many occasions, with two of those highlighted below in 1955 and 1958.

Rangers paid tribute to Prince Philip on social media and flew the Union Flag at half mast outside the stadium.

The club's U18 side also held a minute's silence ahead of their game with Kilmarnock, with the first team set to do the same on Sunday before their Premiership clash against Hibs.

A tweet from the club said: "Everyone at Rangers Football Club is saddened by the passing of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Our deepest sympathies go to Her Majesty and the rest of the Royal Family."
