Prince Philip’s funeral on TV: What time does it start?

Preparations are underway for the funeral of Prince Philip, who died aged 99 last week.

The funeral will take place on Saturday 17 April at 3pm, at St George’s Chapel in Windsor

While the Duke of Edinburgh is entitled to a full state funeral, he will not have one. Before he died, Philip insisted on a ceremony with minimal fuss and his body will not lie in state.

The funeral, formally known as a ceremonial royal funeral, will still be stripped back due to Covid-19 restrictions, however.

Guests are limited to 30 people and members of the public have been urged not to travel to Windsor to pay their respects. It will be broadcast live by the BBC.

When is Prince Philip’s funeral?

Prince Philip’s funeral will begin at 2.40pm on Saturday 17 April, when the coffin will be carried out onto the Quadrangle and placed onto a modified Land Rover designed by the Duke.

The procession will begin at 2.45pm and the service will start at 3pm, when a minute of silence will be held to pay tribute to the Queen’s consort.

How can I watch Prince Philip’s funeral?

The ceremony will be televised live on BBC One and on BBC iPlayer.

Before Covid-19, there would likely have been some 800 guests at the Duke’s funeral. Due to the restrictions, only 30 friends and family members will be able to attend.

Following the service, Prince Philip will be privately interred in the Royal Vault of St George’s Chapel. However, this will not be his final resting place.

When Queen Elizabeth II dies, her husband will be transferred to the King George VI memorial chapel to lie beside her.
