Prince Philip's funeral details revealed for send-off he helped plan

The Queen has signed off on the plans for Prince Philip's funeral.

The Duke of Edinburgh passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle on Friday morning aged 99.

The Queen, his wife of 73 years, has now released plans for his burial ceremony, which will take place this coming Saturday - April 17. There will also be a national minute of silence.

The funeral will take place in line with national coronavirus guidelines, which means it is likely all attendees will be wearing masks, MirrorOnline reports.

A procession will take the the coffin from the State Entrance of Windsor Castle, through the Quadrangle and into St George’s Chapel.

The duke had specially designed two custom Land Rovers to transport his body along a route lined by his military associations and patronages.

These include representatives from the Royal Navy, the Royal Marines, the Royal Air Force, the 4th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland, Ceremonial Bodyguards and the Military Knights of Windsor.

An eight-minute ceremonial procession will finish at 3pm, to allow for a national minute's silence.

The procession will feature members of the royal family, the duke's personal protection officer, his personal secretary, two pages and two valets.

Details of further funeral guests and eulogies are yet to be released by Buckingham Palace and will be confirmed next week.

The event has been titled a 'Ceremonial Royal Funeral', although no lying-in-state will take place.

The duke's death was announced by Buckingham Palace yesterday.

He had been reunited with the Queen weeks earlier after a 28 night stay at a London hospital.

Having recently been treated for a pre-existing heart condition and an infection, his death came just two months before his 100th birthday.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

"Further announcements will made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

A framed plaque containing the statement was placed on the metal fence at the Palace, where the Union Jack flag was lowered to half mast.

Philip retired from public duty in 2017 and made his last official appearance in July 2020 at Windsor Castle.

Greece-born Philip was the third longest-living British royal, behind Princess Alice, who died aged 102 in 2004, and the Queen Mother, who was 101 when she died in 2002.
