Prince Philip 'never got to meet' the two great-grand children named after him

Prince Philip was honoured by two of his grandchildren when their newborns were named after him this year - but sadly it is believed he never got to meet either due to the pandemic.

Princess Eugenie, 31 and Zara Tindall, 39, both paid tribute to their grandfather, who died on Friday aged 99, by giving their babies his name.

Eugenie and husband Jack Brooksbank named their first child August Philip Hawke Brooksbank when he was born on February 9, becoming the Queen and Duke's ninth great-grandchild.

And just a month later her cousin Zara, who is the daughter of Princess Anne and Mark Phillips, decided along with her husband Mike to name their third child and first son Lucas Philip Tindall.

But it is believed the safety restrictions that separated many families across the country during lockdown also prevented the late Duke from meeting the last additions to the royal family.

Zara gave birth to her third son - who is 22nd in line to the throne - on her bathroom floor after being unable to make it to the hospital on March 21. The baby was born healthy and weighing 8lbs 4oz.

The Queen and Prince Philip released a statement shortly after his dramatic birth saying they "look forward to meeting their 10th great-grandchild when circumstances allow" and that they were "delighted" by his birth.

The newborns aren't the only ones to carry the Duke's name as both Prince Charles and Prince William have Philip as middle names: Prince Charles Philip Arthur George, and Prince William Arthur Phillip Louis.

Eugenie, who is the younger daughter of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Sarah, Duchess of York, previously described her granddad as a "rock" that kept The Firm together in a heartwarming tribute to the prince.

Speaking in the 2016 ITV documentary Our Queen at Ninety, Princess Eugenie said of Philip: "I think Grandpa is incredible. He really is strong and consistent.

"He's been there for all these years, and I think he's the rock, you know, for all of us."

The Queen announced her husband's death at midday on Friday, as flags were lowered at half-mast at Buckingham Palace.

The Royal Family said in a statement: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss".

A funeral service for Prince Philip, who would have turned 100 in June, is due to be held at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle on April 17.

In line with Covid-19 rules, it will be capped at 30 and will see the Duke's coffin being carried by a custom-made Land Rover which he helped design.

Prince Harry said he is returning to the UK from his home in the US but his pregnant wife Meghan won't attend on medical grounds.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson also announced he won't be attending the service to allow for members of the family to attend.
