Prince Philip reunited with the Queen on Christmas Eve as he arrives in Sandringham after hospital stay

Prince Philip has been reunited with the Queen on Christmas Eve following a four-night hospital stay.

The Duke of Edinburgh arrived in Sandringham at around midday, after leaving the King Edward VII’s hospital in central London at 8.49am.

He was driven to Buckingham Palace to then take a helicopter Sandringham.

There he will spend Christmas with the Queen, who travelled there by train on Friday.

Upon leaving care this morning, the duke got into the passenger seat of a car in a secluded street behind the hospital.

Philip waved to a nurse before he was driven away.

Philip's admission was previously described as a "precautionary measure".

"The admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness's doctor."

According to reports his admission followed a spell of ill health – the Sun quoted a royal source saying the duke had a fall recently and the Mail reported he had been battling a flu-like condition.

Philip retired from public duties in 2017, though at the time the palace said that was not due to his health.
