Prince Philip funeral music: Names of classical music chosen by the Duke of Edinburgh

The funeral of Prince Philip has begun and the music played was chosen by the Duke of Edinburgh himself.

The funeral for The Duke - which is getting underway in Windsor - will have 30 guests in attendance including Her Majesty The Queen.

The day of mourning began at 11am before a short funeral procession while the ceremonial service began at 3pm. The live blog can be followed here.

Troops stood with their heads bowed as the modified Land Rover, upon which the coffin was placed, was driven into the quadrangle while military bands played music selected by the duke.

Music was played by the tri-service band in the Quadrangle of Windsor Castle before the arrival of the coffin.

The pieces played were I Vow to Thee My Country, Supreme Sacrifice, Jerusalem, Isle of Beauty and Nimrod.

As the funeral procession stepped off, the Band of the Grenadier Guards played Beethoven Funeral March No1 and Beethoven Funeral March No3.

The national anthem was played by military musicians after the Queen, joined by a Lady-in-Waiting, left the Sovereign’s entrance.

The Rifles Guard of Honour, positioned in Horseshoe Cloister, gave a royal salute and the national anthem was played as the funeral procession approached the West Steps of St George’s Chapel.

Due to the coronavirus restrictions, most of the procession will not be able to enter the chapel.

The only exception will be for members of the Royal family and the duke's private secretary Archie Miller Bakewell.

The Duke of Edinburgh died last week aged 99.
