Prince Philip funeral: Armed police seen patrolling Windsor Castle

Armed police officers have been seen patrolling Windsor Castle this morning (April 17) ahead of Prince Philip's funeral.

The Duke of Edinburgh sadly passed peacefully at Windsor Castle on Friday, April 9 at the age of 99.

His funeral is due to take place this afternoon at St George's Chapel in Windsor with a national minute's silence also due to take place.

In the build-up to the historic event, a large police presence has been in place to prepare for possible crowds, but people have largely stayed away.

Hundreds of officers and stewards wearing purple vests have been seen in place around the historic town while police vans and motorbikes have been seen on the roads.

Shoppers and dog walkers could be seen around the high street, though there was little sign of royal supporters near the castle.

Crowds of royal supports have been nowhere to be seen in Windsor this morning despite the nice weather.

Some members of the public have visited briefly to lay flowers but under a controlled and Covid compliant nature.

Jack Carson, 34, who lives locally, placed a bunch near Windsor Castle and said: “I’m going to watch the funeral service from home but I thought it would be nice to come down this morning to lay some flowers down.

“Philip was a fantastic public servant and will be missed by the people in this town.”

Road signs in the area warned: “Avoid all non-essential travel and do not gather at royal residences.”
