Prince Philip book of condolence opened by city council for Glaswegians to pay respects

Glasgow City Council have opened a book of condolence for Glaswegians to pay their respect to Prince Philip.

A leading figure in the British royal family for almost seven decades, Philip, the Queen's husband, today died aged 99.

The palace said in an earlier statement: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh."

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon paid her tributes to the Duke, tweeting: "I am saddened by news that the Duke of Edinburgh has died. I send my personal and deepest condolences - and those of Scottish Government and the people of Scotland - to Her Majesty The Queen and her family."

And Glaswegians can now share their own tributes after Glasgow City Council opened a book of condolence. Due to covid-19 instructions, the council are unable to open a physical book of condolence and the people of Glasgow are encouraged to pay their respects online.

This afternoon, The Lord Provost of Glasgow said: "Sadly, due to current restrictions, we are unable to open a physical Book of Condolence. We have made available an online Book of Condolence for those who wish to pay their respects at http://glasgow.gov.uk/bookofcondolence."

Furthermore, the Lord Provost confirmed the Union flag at Glasgow City Chambers has been flown at half mast as a sign of respect.
