Prince of Wales shares photo of his bucket hat as he shares message in Welsh

Prince William has shared a message of support for Wales as they took on the USA in their opening match at the World Cup. In a historic moment, Wales appeared at their first World Cup match in 64 years to claim a 1-1 draw, having last appeared on the world stage in 1958. You can follow our updates and analysis from the match here.

Supporters descended on fan zones across the country to cheer on Wales, with bucket hats galore - not to mention the hundreds of supporters who have travelled out to Qatar. In a message of support, Prince William - now the Prince of Wales - shared his own on Twitter.

Sharing his message of support in Welsh, with a follow-up tweet in English, along with a picture of his bucket hat and a TV remote, he wrote: "After reaching the #FIFAWorldCup for the first time since 1958, it's only right to watch the first @Cymru game in style. Thanks for the bucket hat @ElinCeredigion! W."

Earlier, he wrote another message of support to both Wales and England via Kensington Royal, the official Twitter account he shares with Kate, Princess of Wales, ahead of the matches: "Wishing the very best of luck to @Cymru and @England as they kick off in the #FifaWorldCup today. Looking forward to watching!"

Last week, Prince William headed to Cardiff for his first official visit to the Senedd since he was named Prince of Wales by King Charles III on September 9. During the visit, he told Llywydd Elin Jones that he thought it would be inauthentic to switch to supporting Wales ahead of England, after telling England "the country is behind you" during a World Cup squad visit.

“I tell people I am supporting both. I can't lose. I have supported England since I was quite small. I support England more in the football but Wales in the rugby," he said. "When I was growing up Wales didn’t get through to the tournaments but I will be supporting them all the way through the process. Getting to the World Cup is a big deal and I’ll be supporting Wales through the process.”
