Prince Harry will open hospital in touching tribute to mum Diana's landmine work

Prince Harry is to follow in the footsteps of mum Princess Diana on his Africa tour, opening a hospital dedicated to her landmine work.

Photos of Diana walking through a cleared minefield in 1997 and meeting those maimed by mines became iconic.

Her visit led to the drafting of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, signed by 133 nations. It came into effect in March 1999, 18 months after she died.

Harry will travel to Angola on Friday to see work being done by the Halo Trust, championed by Diana, and to visit Huambo Orthopaedic Centre.

The hospital, which his mum toured in 1997, is to be renamed in her honour after an upgrade. A senior Palace source said: “This is all about wanting to fulfil his mother’s legacy.”

Harry, at 35 a year younger than Diana when she died, will also visit a minefield. His private secretary Samantha Cohen called it “a poignant journey.”

The Duke lands in Cape Town, South Africa, tomorrow with Meghan and Archie, who will stay there while he visits Botswana, Angola and Malawi.
