Prince Harry started serious therapy five years ago after row with Meghan Markle

Prince Harry has revealed that he began serious therapy around five years ago following an argument with his future wife, Meghan Markle.

The 36-year-old Duke of Sussex has opened up to Oprah Winfrey about his decision to quit the royal family as well as traumatic memories of his childhood.

During the Apple documentary The Me You See, which focuses on mental health, Harry admitted to needing therapy long before he sought it out.

It was only following a dispute with Meghan, that he decided to 'deal with his past' in order to make his relationship work.

"I quickly established that if this relationship was going to work, I had to deal with my past," Harry told Oprah.

Harry revealed that Meghan had encouraged the royal to seek professional help in order to help him.

He added: "When she said, 'I think you need to see someone,' it was in reaction to an argument that we had. And in that argument, not knowing about it, I reverted back to 12-year-old Harry.

"The moment I started therapy, it was probably within my second session, my therapist turned around to me and said, 'That sounds like you're reverting to 12-year-old Harry'," he added in the candid discussion.

The couple went on to get married in May 2018 and are now expecting their second child together. However, amid a departure from royal duties, their journey has been far from easy.

Elsewhere in the documentary, Prince Harry was seen tackling trauma by taking part in an EMDR session that featured in the episode.

The process - eye movement, desensitization, reprocessing - is a form of therapy aimed at helping emotional distress by briefly focusing on a traumatic memory.

Harry uses EMDR to treat unresolved anxiety stemming from his anger at the media and the death of his mother, Princess Diana, when he was 12.

During his EMDR session, Harry opened up about feeling overcome with emotion every time he travels to London and explains the therapy was like “cleaning my hard drive.”

Harry's experiences with therapy largely stem from traumatic memories from his childhood - including the death of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales - as well as more recent harassment on social media of he and his wife Meghan Markle.

He explains during the episode: "The clicking of cameras, and the flash of cameras makes my blood boil. It makes me angry. It takes me back to what happened to my mum, what I experienced as a kid."

The Me You See is a five-part documentary that marks Harry's first outing as a producer since he and his wife Meghan stepped down from their royal duties and moved to California last year.
