Prince Harry says Meghan Markle's miscarriage was caused by 'stress' of tabloid lawsuit

Prince Harry believes the stress of Meghan Markle's lawsuit against Associated Newspapers resulted in her miscarriage.

The loss of the pregnancy occurred not long after the couple moved to America, as Meghan detailed the tragic loss in an op-ed article in the New York Times. Meghan described how she felt a a “sharp cramp” and “dropped to the floor” while changing their son, Archie.

This was after the couple stepped down as senior royals and relocated to California with Archie, and Meghan began her lawsuit against the Mail on Sunday. She sued the newspaper over its publication of excerpts of a private letter she sent her dad, Thomas Markle, after he didn't attend their wedding in 2018.

In the documentary Meghan says: "The first morning that we woke up in our new home is when I miscarried." Fighting back tears, Harry placed the blame for the miscarriage on the leaking of the letter Meghan sent to Thomas Markle.

Harry said: "I believe my wife suffered a miscarriage because of what the Mail did. I watched the whole thing. Now, do we absolutely know that the miscarriage was created, caused by that? Course we don't.

"But bearing in mind the stress that that caused, the lack of sleep and the timing of the pregnancy, how many weeks in she was. I can say, from what I saw, that miscarriage was created by what they were trying to do to her."

The couple's lawyer Jenny Afia said Markle would be texting her at 3am about the case. "She'd be awake, unable to sleep, thinking about this case and the wider issues and the toll it was taking," she said. "I knew the stress [it] was having on Meghan."

In the previous episode, Meghan reveals that the late Queen was the one who suggested she reached out to her father via letter. She said: "I reached out to her Majesty and said 'this is what's going on, what do you want me to do? I want to... Whatever advice you have'.

"But ultimately it was suggested by the Queen and the Prince of Wales that I write my dad a letter and I had gone to great lengths to get that letter to my dad discreetly."

She added: "I can't put this letter in the mail with the return address being Kensington Palace and send it to Tom Markle and assume it's gonna get there. So I send it to my business manager in LA, I was like, 'He'll recognise that name’.

"Then I get the picture of the signature confirmation that it's been delivered, and it's not his signature. That's not my dad's handwriting. It just says 'Thomas’.”
