Prince Harry’s friend 'shocked' he halted royal duties and fears he'll regret it

A former Army comrade of Prince Harry has spoken out and claimed his friend will come to "regret" his decision to step back from his Royal Family responsibilities.

Martyn Compton, who has known Harry for 15 years, was badly burned in Afghanistan in 2006 and has been seen alongside the Prince at various social events.

Choosing to express his opinion in an article for The Sun, Mr Compton says Harry is likely to be hurt by losing his honorary military titles.

He also highlighted the upcoming television interview with Oprah Winfrey and the Duke of Sussex's TV deals with Netflix, saying "no royal should ever be seen to be cashing in".

He said: "As Prince Harry ’s friend and someone who has served alongside him, I’m shocked and amazed it’s all come to this. I genuinely hope the interview with Oprah Winfrey and all that goes with it is worth it to him as this is a very high price to pay."

Mr Compton revealed that he knows just how much his Army links mean to Prince Harry and said he was concerned it was a decision he may come to regret.

"For someone who has done so much for veterans and soldiers, I hope it’s not a decision he comes to bitterly regret," he added.

"I know how much being in the military means to Prince Harry as he did his time, he earned his right to be an officer, and he earned the respect of others through doing all that he did — not just because of who he was. But my own view is that you can’t have it both ways."

Mr Compton, who suffered 75 degree burns in an explosion, described Harry as "respected and hugely popular" and said he was viewed as a "good bloke".

He said he has never met the Duchess of Sussex but said he hoped they had "found joy".
