Prince Harry revives his security fight with the Home Office by writing to Shabana Mahmood

The Duke of Sussex has revived his security battle with the Home Office by writing to Shabana Mahmood about his case, according to reports.

Prince Harry is lobbying the Home Secretary having previously been in correspondence with her predecessor Yvette Cooper after being stripped of full-time police protection granted to royals.

A formal request has been lodged by the prince with the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec) which is overseen by the Home Office asking for a risk-assessment process to be conducted, sources close to the process confirmed to The Times.

Harry is believed to recognise his case will not be top of Ms Mahmood’s priority list, he has asked for Ravec to “abide by its own rules” that a risk management should be carried out for each member of the royal family and other qualifying VIPs every year.

It comes as one of the duke’s known stalkers had to be “body-blocked” by his private security after getting close to him on two separate occasions during his recent visit to the UK.

The female entered a “secure zone” at a London hotel where Harry attended a WellChild awards ceremony in September.

The 41-year-old and wife Meghan, 44, announced they were stepping back as working members of the royal family in January 2020.

Following their departure, the couple were told that they would instead receive a “bespoke” security service, whereby they would be required to give 30 days’ notice of any plans to travel to Britain, with each assessed for threat levels and whether protection is needed.

In May, Harry lost his Court of Appeal challenge over his security arrangements while in the UK and said, in the TV interview following the decision, he “can’t see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the UK”.

The source told the Times: “I can confirm that the duke has written to the new Home Secretary.

“While he realises this will not be top of the incoming secretary’s in-tray, it is something which should have happened a long time ago.

“We have had the can kicked down the road for quite a while now but all he’s asking is for Ravec to abide by its own rules which state that an RMB should be conducted each year. The last one for the duke was in 2019.“

Home Office sources confirmed that requests have been made by the duke but said it was government policy not to comment on individual cases.

During Harry’s visit last month, he attended a series of charity events and also reunited with King Charles for the first time in 19 months.
