Prince Harry and Meghan open extended Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park

The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, has officially opened the extended Anzac Memorial at Hyde Park in central Sydney.

Dressed in a military uniform, Prince Harry was accompanied by his wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, in all black.

The Royals were given a tour of the upgraded facility, which was originally built to honour the servicemen and servicewomen who lost their lives in World War I.

When it was originally opened by Prince Henry in 1934 the memorial read: "Opened by the son of a king."

Today, Prince Harry opened the facility, upgraded at a cost of $40 million, by unveiling a plaque which read it was opened by a "grandson of the Queen".

The couple also laid a wreath and observed a minute's silence at the memorial, which now honours all Australians who have served.

The new Hall of Service includes an artwork which features over 1,700 soil samples from each NSW address given by World War I enlistees.

It is one of the more official events of the Royal tour, which is the first official overseas trip for the Royals as a married couple.

This afternoon the Royal Couple will travel by boat to Cockatoo Island in Sydney, before the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games tonight.
