Prince Harry may not be able to salute at grandad Philip's funeral - but William can

Prince Harry may be unable to salute to honour his grandfather Prince Philip this weekend in what could be seen as his new status within the royal family being visibly marked for the first time.

The Duke of Sussex is back in the UK ahead of Prince Philip's funeral on Saturday.

He has flown back to be by the family's side as they prepare to say goodbye to Philip, who died peacefully age 99 last Friday.

It is Harry's first trip home since he and wife Meghan Markle left for California after their split from royal life.

Following his decision to step away from working duties, Harry lost all his honorary military titles.

That includes his status as Captain General of the Royal Marines.

It means he is now very likely to wear a suit on Saturday, rather than military uniform.

Only those who wear headdress can salute, strict protocol dictates, Hello! Magazine is reporting.

His brother Prince William and father Prince Charles are expected to wear the uniform and therefore will salute.

Prince Andrew, having been forced to step back "for the foreseeable future" over his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, is also prevented from wearing dress – despite serving the with the Royal Navy for 22 years.

The funeral will be held at St George's Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle on Saturday and will coincide with a national three-minutes' silence.

Harry has said the Duke of Edinburgh was "a legend of banter" and he and Meghan "will always hold a special place for you in our hearts".

In an emotional statement released shortly after one from his brother, he said: "My grandfather was a man of service, honour and great humour.

"He was authentically himself, with a seriously sharp wit, and could hold the attention of any room due to his charm - and also because you never knew what he might say next.

""He will be remembered as the longest reigning consort to the Monarch, a decorated serviceman, a Prince and a Duke.

"But to me, like many of you who have lost a loved one or grandparent over the pain of this past year, he was my grandpa: master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right 'til the end.

"He has been a rock for Her Majesty The Queen with unparalleled devotion, by her side for 73 years of marriage, and while I could go on, I know that right now he would say to all of us, beer in hand, 'Oh do get on with it!'

"So, on that note, Grandpa, thank you for your service, your dedication to Granny, and for always being yourself. You will be sorely missed, but always remembered-by the nation and the world.

"Meghan, Archie, and I (as well as your future great-granddaughter) will always hold a special place for you in our hearts. Per Mare, Per Terram.'"
