Prince Harry 'frustrated' with royals before Meghan Markle - asking 'why can't I do that'

Prince Harry became "frustrated" with his role in the Royal Family and the limits on his position before he met Meghan Markle, commentators have claimed.

While many assume that the Duke's difficulties with his family began after Meghan joined The Firm, expert Camilla Tominey claims the struggles began long before he fell in love with the American actress.

Speaking on the ITV documentary 'Harry and William: What Went Wrong?' she suggested Harry might have a "spare to the heir" mentality, which could have propelled him to want to make the most of his influence and do good work.

She suggested Harry may have wanted to "make his life count" before William's children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, pushed him "further down the pecking order."

She added: "There was a lot of talk, even before Meghan was on the scene, of Harry saying, 'Why can't I do this'?"

Tominey also suggested Harry wanted to shake things up, asking: "Why can't we do it a bit differently?"

She claimed his attitude of wanting to get things done accelerated when he met Meghan Markle, which Tominey described as giving him "rocket fuel."

The programme explored the strained relationship between Harry and his older brother, just days after they put on a united front to unveil a stunning statue of Princess Diana at Kensington Palace.

In particular, the documentary explored Harry's relationship with both his brother and his sister-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Vanity Fair royal editor Katie Nicholl discussed their lives before Harry and Meghan jetted off to LA after making the decision to step down as senior royals.

She said: "They were living together, albeit across the courtyard. They were working together out of the same office.

"They were doing the same charitable work. You couldn't get a tighter unit."

However, narrator Frances Barber added: "Increasingly Harry felt frustrated with his supporting role."

Contributors speculated about how Harry was feeling next to his older brother, who will one day be King.

Harry and Meghan opened up about their struggles while living in Kensington Palace as senior royals in a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in March.

During the sit-down chat, Harry talked about feeling "trapped" in his position in the Royal Family, adding he'd never have been able to get out without Meghan by his side.

Harry said: "I was trapped, but I didn’t know I was trapped. Trapped within the system, like the rest of my family are.

"My father and my brother, they are trapped. They don’t get to leave. And I have huge compassion for that."
