Prince Harry and Meghan pay tribute to Elton John thanking him for Diana friendship

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have paid tribute to Elton John as they thanked him for being such a good friend to Harry's late mum Princess Diana.

The couple popped up in Disney+'s Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger – in which celebs praised the star ahead of his farewell show, which was broadcast live from California in the early hours of Monday morning (Nov 21).

In the video, smiling for the camera, Meghan, 41, says: "Hi Elton, we just wanted to say congratulations and that we are just so proud of you and that we were able to see you on your farewell tour also."

Prince Harry, 38, then speaks about the special relationship the Your Song singer had with his mum and children, Archie and Lilibet.

"Thank you for entertaining everybody for so many decades, thank you for being the friend that you were for my mum, thank you for being our friend, thank you for being friend to our kids and thank you for entertaining people around the world," he said.

"Even though this is officially your retirement, this won't be your last gig, we know that, but we love you and congratulations on an incredible career," he said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's tributes were placed between Tony Bennet, Joe Biden and First Lady, Dr Jill Biden's best wishes to the music icon.

Meghan and Harry appeared to have filmed their tribute in front of the entrance of the office of their organisation, Archewell, as a door behind them can be seen with the company's logo.

Sir Elton has remained close to Harry after the singer famously penned a rewritten version of Candle In The Wind, which he performed during Princess Diana's funeral in 1997.

Elton and his husband David Furnish were also among the many celebrity guests invited to attend Harry and Meghan's wedding in May 2018.

Returning the invitation, the Rocketman star invited the Sussexes to his £15million pad in the French Riviera in August 2019.

The trip to Nice came shortly after Harry and Meghan had returned by private jet to the UK from Ibiza after a six-night break on the Spanish island to mark the Duchess's 38th birthday.

The couple were slammed for taking four private jets for their holidays in less than a fortnight, however Elton – who's real name is Reg Dwight – defended the couple.

Taking to social media, the star said he had provided Harry, Meghan and their son Archie with a private jet for their return trip to his home in Nice in August that year.

He said: " I am deeply distressed by today’s distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s private stay at my home in Nice last week.

"Prince Harry’s Mother, Diana Princess Of Wales was one of my dearest friends. I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death."

Prince Harry looks set to ruffle more feathers when his book Spare is published in January.

The bombshell memoir describes his discontent with the royal family – including how he says 'The Firm' treated his wife Meghan.
