Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wanted to 'compromise for freedom but Queen refused'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wanted to find a compromise in stepping down from the Firm but the Queen refused, a new book has claimed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex quit their roles as senior royals in early 2020 to embark on a new, private life in the US.

The couple were allowed to leave the Firm, but couldn't use their HRH titles in their quest to become financially independent.

At the time, the Queen thanked the couple for their "dedicated" work, adding: "It is my whole family’s hope that today’s agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life.”

Valentine Low's explosive new book Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind The Crown, alleges that during negotiations Harry and Meghan wanted to live abroad while also carrying out royal duties - but the Queen slapped down the suggestions.

The excerpt reads: "They wanted to find a compromise whereby they could live part of the year abroad but carry out some royal duties at home. No such compromise was found.

"Crucially, it was the Queen who took the view that unless the couple were prepared to abide by the restrictions that applied to working members of the royal family, they could not be allowed to carry out official duties.

"One source said: 'There was a very clear view: you can’t be in and out. And if you’ve got such clarity of view, it’s very difficult to say, ‘Why don’t we go 10 per cent this way instead of 20 per cent?’

"Compromise was off the table, removed by the Queen."

The book is set to be released on October 6 and also contains more bombshells about the royal couple.

It comes as the rift between the Sussexes and other members of the Royal Family rocked the monarchy and it was only a coincidence that Harry was in the UK when the Queen died as he was here for charity work.

Prince Harry's fear of becoming "irrelevant" and an attempt at bridge building by William that was turned down are two of the several bombshell claims to come from a new book about the royals.

Other explosive details involve Meghan's unhappiness at having to do walkabouts during a royal trip to Australia and the occasion when Harry was told off by the Queen for being "rude".
