The Queen's wedding gift to Meghan and Harry was a dukedom mothballed for the last 175 years

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will assume the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex following their wedding, the Palace has confirmed

Prince Harry will also gain the Scottish title, the Earl of Dumbarton.

The titles are bestowed by the Queen.

The Queen also gifted the pair a piece of Welsh gold, which is incredibly rare and was used to make Ms Markle's wedding band.

The Duke of Sussex title has been vacant since April 21, 1843, when its only previous holder Prince Augustus Frederick, the sixth son of King George III, died.

The duke was married twice but both were in breach of Royal Marriages Act 1772, meaning all of his children were illegitimate and could not have the title transferred to them.

The Earl of Dumbarton title has been extinct since 1749.

Prince William and his wife Princess Catherine had the titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge bestowed on them by the Queen when they married in 2011.
