Prince Harry and Meghan Markle news - live: Royals launch scathing attack on media as Buckingham Palace warn couple over decision to step down

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex say they want to become financially independent and “step back as 'senior' members of the royal family”.

In a statement published to the Sussex Royal Instagram account -  following speculation that the couple would move to Canada - they announced they would split their time between the UK and North America.

However in a public statement, the palace said discussions on the issue remained “at an early stage”.

A spokesperson added: “We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.’’

It was the relationship that was supposed to mark the modernisation of the monarchy; instead, it became a turbulent tale of celebrity obsession, social media and family turmoil, writes Sophie Gallagher.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have faced public scrutiny since they first announced they were a couple in 2017.

Many believe the decision to leave the royal family will ultimately make them happier.

While some believe the choice to be a poor one, others have expressed their support for the royal couple.

The couple explained their new freedoms regarding their social media in further detail, writing: "Historically, the understanding with the Royal Rota expects that if Their Royal Highnesses were to release a photo that has never been seen, they would be expected to give the image to The Rota (of which four of the seven are UK tabloids) simultaneously or in advance of their own release.

"This formula enables these select publications to profit by publishing these images on their websites/front pages. Any breach in this understanding creates long term repercussions.
The current structure makes it challenging for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex to personally share moments in their lives directly with members of the public (via social media for example), without first going through the filter of the Royal Rota."
Despite announcing their decision to step back from royal duties, the duke and duchess said they plan to continue updating fans of their lives via their Instagram account and other social media.

If anything, fans can expect to get a more transparent look into the lives of Meghan and Harry, according to the statement, which reads: "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will continue to have a social media platform. They look forward to continuing their use of social media and believe that their updated media approach will enable them to share more, with you, directly."
Regarding their thoughts on the media in general, the couple said: "The Duke and Duchess believe in a free, strong and open media industry, which upholds accuracy and fosters inclusivity, diversity and tolerance. Both The Duke and Duchess have collaborated with media organisations including: Time Magazine, National Geographic, The Daily Telegraph, British Vogue, and various others. Their Royal Highnesses recognise that their roles as members of the Royal Family are subject to interest, and they welcome accurate and honest media reporting as well as being held to account if appropriate. Equally, like every member of society, they also value privacy as individuals and as a family."
On the Sussex Royal website, the duke and duchess elaborated on what their decision means in regards to their relationship with the media.

The couple also touched on the reliability of royal correspondents, explaining: "Britain’s Royal Correspondents are regarded internationally as credible sources of both the work of members of The Royal Family as well as of their private lives. This misconception propels coverage that is often carried by other outlets around the world, amplifying frequent misreporting. Regrettably, stories that may have been filed accurately by Royal Correspondents are, also, often edited or rewritten by media editorial teams to present false impressions."

While all of the factors that influenced the royal couple's decision to step back from from their duties are unknown, it is believed the UK media and its treatment of Meghan was a contributing factor.
It is believed that the palace was not made aware of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's decision before they made the announcement.

Royal commentator Sally Baker told The Independent: “They’ve been away for six weeks in Canada working out what they want to do with their lives and they’ve made an announcement. It’s clear they didn’t consult anyone about it.

“Now the palace is trying to take away from their announcement. It looks like the royal family is in trouble.”

In the statement, a palace spokesperson said that discussions regarding the issue remained at "an early stage".

"We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through," the spokesperson added.
Just hours after Prince Harry and Meghan made the announcement, Buckingham Palace released a statement contradicting the duke and duchess's claims.

In response to the announcement, fans of the royal couple expressed both shock and support of the decision.

While most of the reactions were positive, outspoken critic Piers Morgan made his opinion on the couple's announcement known on Twitter, where he said: "People say I'm too critical of Meghan Markle - but she ditched her family, her dad, ditched most of her old friends, split Harry from William & has now split him from the royal family. I rest my case.

In addition to taking time away from the royal family, the duke and duchess also cited their son Archie as a factor behind their decision, explaining: "This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen," the couple said on their official Instagram account. “It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.

"We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.”

The couple's announcement, which they shared on Instagram, came after rumours circulated that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had decided to move to Canada full-time.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said today that they would be stepping back as “senior” members of the royal family in an unprecedented announcement.
